Bad Samaritan is an american horror thriller film directed by Dean Devlin and starring David Tennant (known Scottish actor for his masterful portrayal of Hamlet) and Robert Sheehan in the lead roles.

In some Latin American countries it was released under the name Latidos en la Oscuridad (Beats in the Dark).

Bad Samaritan es una película estadounidense de terror y suspenso dirigida por Dean Devlin protagonizada por David Tennant (reconocido actor escocés por su magistral interpretación de Hamlet) y Robert Sheehan en los roles principales.

En algunos países de Hispanoamérica fue estrenada con el nombre de Latidos en la Oscuridad.

The plot is set in Portland (Oregon, USA) where a young freelance photographer (Sean Falco played by the Irish actor Robert Sheehan) tries to make a living not subject to the discipline of a fixed job as a freelance who captures with his image what he likes the most.

Landscapes, people in motion, aspects of everyday life. However, this is not enough for him to survive and he has to find a second job as a night-time valet in a well-known restaurant with his friend Derek.

They soon discover that this seemingly boring job with no future prospects can be extremely profitable for them.

While the customers are comfortably seated in the restaurant enjoying their dinner, Sean and Derek "borrow" the cars that their owners have given them to park and go to their homes to steal from them, usually valuables that are not too visible, so that their owners take as long as possible to discover the theft and so that suspicion does not fall on them.

Everything seems to be proceeding smoothly until one night a wealthy businessman (Cale Erendreich played by David Tennant) arrives at the restaurant and, as usual, gives them his car, a luxurious Maserati.

Thinking of a rich haul, the two friends head for Erendreich's house but are in for an unpleasant surprise.

When they arrive at the luxurious villa, they find a bound and gagged girl inside.

From that moment on, this discovery will endanger not only the girl's life and their own, but also that of their families and loved ones who are close to them, as the rich businessman reveals himself to be a true psychopath.

Basically, Bad Samaritan is nothing more than a cat-and-mouse game between a rich, wealthy, psychopathic, sort of super-criminal who anticipates every move in advance, with childhood traumas represented in this case by Erendreich and a sort of fake Samaritan embodied by Sean who steals not out of malice but for the adrenaline rush he gets from acting that way. A sort of modern Robin Hood who robs the rich to give it to himself and his friend .......

La trama se desarrolla en Portland (estado de Oregón, EE.UU.) donde un joven fotógrafo independiente ( Sean Falco interpretado por el actor irlandés Robert Sheehan) trata de ganarse la vida no sujeto a la disciplina de un trabajo fijo como un freelance que captura con su imagen lo que más le gusta.

Paisajes, gente en movimiento, aspectos de la vida cotidiana. Sin embargo esto no le basta para sobrevivir y debe procurarse un segundo trabajo como aparcacoches nocturno en eun conocido restaurante junto a su amigo Derek.

Pronto descubren que este trabajo, aparentemente aburrido y sin perspectivas futuras, les puede resultar -en cambio- sumamente rentable.

Mientras los clientes están cómodamente sentados en el restaurant disfrutando su cena Sean y Derek toman "prestados" los autos que sus propietarios les han consegnados para estacionarlos y se dirigen a los domicilios de éstos para robarles, generalmente objetos de valor pero que no estén demasiado a la vista, de manera que sus propietarios tarden el mayor tiempo posible en descubrir el robo y de esta manera las sospechas no recaigan sobre ellos.

Todo parece proceder sin obstáculos hasta que una noche llega al restaurante un rico hombre de negocios (Cale Erendreich interpretado por David Tennant) quien, como es habitual les entrega su auto, una lujosa Maserati.

Pensando en un rico botín, ambos amigos se dirigen a la casa de Erendreich pero se encuentran con una desagradable sorpresa.

Cuando llegan a la lujosa villa encuentran en su interior a una chica atada y amordazada.

A partir de ese momento ese descubrimiento pondrá en peligro no solo la vida de la chica y de ellos mismos, sino también de sus familiares y seres queridos que le están cerca ya que en realidad el rico hombre de negocios se revela un verdadero psicópata.

Básicamente Bad Samaritan no es otra cosa que el juego del gato y el ratón entre un rico acaudalado, psicópata, una especie de supercriminal que anticipa todas las movidas de antemano, con traumas infantiles representado en este caso por Erendreich y una especie de falso samaritano encarnado por Sean que roba no por maldad sino por la adrenalina que le produce actuar de esa manera. Una especie de Robin Hood moderno que oba a los ricos para dárselo...... a él mismo y a su amigo.

The film is easy to watch and quite entertaining from a suspense point of view, especially during the first thirty minutes.

Then it gradually slips into the conventional territory characteristic of so many other films in the genre, more so than the performances of its protagonists because of a script that is in some respects weak. For example, the time the film devotes to Cale's house/prison/torture chamber, which should be the main "location" in a thriller/horror film, is very limited, as it almost immediately moves to a second location (all with a delightfully improbable ease that goes beyond the context of the central plot).

Brandon Boyce's - the screenwriter - work in that regard is not as strong as the sequences featuring the prisoner, who seems to be in much less danger from the moment she becomes involved.

Or, at least, that is what the film conveys.

La película se puede ver sin problemas y es bastante entretenida desde el punto de vista del suspenso, especialmente durante los primeros treinta minutos.

Luego se va deslizando poco a poco en un terreno convencionalista característico de tantos otros films del género, más que por la actuación de sus protagonistas por un guión en ciertos aspectos endeble. Por ejemplo el tiempo que el film dedica a la casa/prisión/cámara de tortura de Cale que debería ser la "location" principal en un film de suspenso y horror, es muy limitado, ya que casi inmediatamente se traslada a una segunda localización (todo ello con una facilidad deliciosamente improbable y que va más allá del contexto del argumento central).

El trabajo de Brandon Boyce -el guionista- en ese aspecto no es demasiado sólido como las secuencias que muestran a la prisionera, que parece estar en mucho menos peligro desde el momento en el que se ve involucrada.

O, al menos, es lo que transmite en la película.
