Travelling along the Patagonian Atlantic coast is, in terms of distances, similar to travelling across the steppe of this beautiful southern region.

Huge spaces, a horizon that reaches as far as the eye can see, long beaches, the ever-present wind and the spartan aridity of the Patagonian landscape in all its splendour. In this case mixed with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

And in between all the vastness and variety of the Patagonian biodiversity. Flat beaches, some dunes that mark the limit between the Patagonian steppe and the sea, some not too high cliffs irregularly placed along the entire Atlantic corridor, an infinite sea of a captivating and spectacular blue, reserves of marine animals unique in the world that come to these last warm waters of Patagonia to have their offspring, and hundreds of kilometres to walk, admire and get to know.

Recorrer la costa atlántica patagónica es, a nivel de distancias, similar a recorrer la estepa de esa hermosa región austral.

Inmensos espacios, un horizonte que llega hasta donde da nuestra vista, playas extensas, el viento siempre presente y la espartana aridez del paisaje patagónico en todo su esplendor. En este caso mezclada con las aguas del Océeano Atlántico.

Y en el medio toda la vastedad y la variedad de la biodiversidad patagónica. Playas planas, algunas dunas que señalan el límite entre la estepa patagónica y el mar, algunos acantilados no demasiados altos situados en forma irregular a lo largo de todo el corredor atlántico, un infinito mar de un azul atrapante y espectacular, reservas de animales marinos únicos en el mundo que llegan a estas últimas aguas cálidas de la Patagonia para tener sus crías, y cientos de kms para recorrer, admirar y conocer.

200 kms of living nature. / 200 kms de naturaleza viva.

Our objective is to cover the almost 200 kms that separate Viedma from San Antonio Oeste before arriving at the well-known seaside resort of Las Grutas.

It is a journey that takes no more than an hour and a half for those who use it as a means of work.

But we, as the nature-loving tourists that we are, have decided to take a whole weekend to get to know the area in depth.

The first hundred kilometres from Viedma, the capital of the province of Rio Negro, offer us the immensity of the Patagonian coast. Desolate and beautiful at the same time. We travelled without stopping.

Nuestro objetivo es recorrer los casi 200 kms que separan Viedma de San Antonio Oeste antes de llegar a la conocida localidad balnearia Las Grutas.

Es un viaje que aquellos que lo usan como medio de trabajo no tardan más de una hora y medio en recorrerlo.

Pero nosotros, como turistas amantes de la naturaleza que somos, hemos decidido tomarnos todo un fin de semana, para conocer la zona en profundidad.

Los primeros cien kilómetros desde que salimos de Viedma, la capital de la provincia de Rio Negro nos ofrece toda la inmensidad de la costa patagónica. Desolada y hermosa a la vez. Viajamos sin detenernos.

We travel for 100 kms admiring a landscape unique in the world and approaching little by little to the sea coast that we will then follow uninterruptedly.

The first access we find is San Antonio Este.

After travelling 25 kms of a new road, perfectly asphalted and with some lodgings that are being finished to show the tourist interest that this area is awakening, we arrive at the long awaited Playa de las Conchillas.

Viajamos durante 100 kms admirando un paisaje único al mundo y acercándonos de a poco a la costa marítima que luego seguiremos ininterrumpidamente.

El primer acceso que encontramos es el de San Antonio Este.

Luego de recorrer 25 kms de una rura nueva, perfectamente asfaltado y con algunos alojamientos que se están terminando de construir evidenciando el interés turístico que esta zona está despertando, llegando ala tan esperada Playa de las Conchillas.

The Beach of the Shells, its magic and respect for nature. / La Playa de las Conchillas, su magia y el respeto por la naturaleza.

In the middle of the monotonous solitude of the Patagonian steppe, a landscape that seems to be from another planet. An enormous beach of shells.

Thousands and thousands of shells, eroded by the sun and the wind, bleached to a colour that amazes from afar and gives a surreal aspect to the whole beach.

As far as we were able to find out, it is a variety of clams typical of this area known as "purple clams" (its scientific name is "amiantis purpurata").

Initially their colour is an intense violet and then gradually lightens until they acquire a wide range of pinkish tints.

They end up becoming white with the passing of time due to the effect of the sun.

En medio de la monótona soledad de la estepa patagónica un paisaje que parece ser de otro planeta. Una enorme playa de conchillas.

Miles y miles de caracoles, que, erosionados por el sol y por el viento, fueron blanqueándose hasta quedar de ese color que asombra desde lejos y le un aspecto surrealista a toda la playa.

De lo que pudimos informarnos se trata de la variedad de almejas típicas de esta zona conocidas como "almejas púrpuras" (su nombre científico es “amiantis purpurata”).

Inicialmente su color es de un violeta intenso hasta ir paulatinamente aclarándose hasta adquirir una vasta gama de c olores rosados.

Que terminan siendo blancas con el pasar del tiempo por el efecto del sol.

After touring the dunes we were forced to leave the car on the beach and cover it with an umbrella and a tarpaulin to protect us from the sun. It was very intense despite the fact that it was not yet the middle of summer.

It is the best time to visit this beach because there are very few tourists. In fact most of them go to Las Grutas where they have all the facilities.

To stay near this beach you have to go to San Antonio Este, a small fishing village about 10 kms away.

Or find a free flat in the new housing complexes that are being built all along the beach (but on the plateau) so that the whole beach is free.

Después de recorrer las dunas nos vimos obligados a dejar el auto en la playa y cubrirlo con una sombrilla y una lona para repararnos del sol. Muy intenso a pesar de que no estamos todavía en pleno verano.

Es el mejor momento para visitar esta playa porque hay muy pocos turistas. De hecho la mayor parte de ello va hacia Las Grutas donde tienen todas las comodidades.

Para alojarse cerca de esta playa hay que ir hasta San Antonio Este, una pequeña aldea pesquera situada a unos 10 kms de distancia.

O encontrar algún departamento libre en los nuevos complejos habitacionales que se están construyendo a lo largo de toda la playa (pero sobre la meseta) de manera que queda toda la playa libre.

We continue walking along the beach and admiring the unique landscape.

We hope that future tourists will be respectful of nature and leave the shells in their place.

Unfortunately a tourist traffic has been discovered and people are taking the shells as souvenirs.

For this reason there are numerous signs encouraging tourists to take only the garbage.... and leave the shells in their natural place.

Seguimos caminando por la playa y admirando un paisaje único.

Esperando que los futuros turistas sean respetuosos de la naturaleza y dejen las conchillas en su lugar.

Desgraciadamente se ha descubierto un tráfico turístico ge gente que se llevan las conchillas como souvenirs.

Por esta razón hay numerosos carteles que incitan a los turistas a llevarse solo la basura.... y dejar las conchillas en su lugar natural.

San Antonio East, fishing village and abandoned boats. / San Antonio Este, aldea pesquera y barcos abandonados.

San Antonio Este is the port par excellence from where fruits from Río Negro (especially apples) are exported to the world.

We contemplate the immensity of these cargo ships, the particular navigation and mooring manoeuvres and the places where fishing can be practised in total tranquillity, surprising us with a fascinating and changing natural environment.

And of course the old abandoned boats, testimonies of a past that refuses to disappear.

San Antonio Este es el puerto por excelencia desde donde son exportadas las frutas rionegrinas (especialmente manzanas) al mundo.

Contemplamos la inmensidad de estos barcos de carga, las particulares maniobras de navegación y amarre y los lugares donde se puede practicar la pesca con total tranquilidad, sorprendiéndonos de un entorno natural fascinante y mutable a cada momento.

Y por supuesto los viejos barcos abandonados testimonios de un pasado que se niega a desaparecer.

Between beaches of paradisiacal shells and old abandoned ships we follow our itinerary along the length and breadth of the Patagonian Atlantic coast of Argentina.
