The island of Elba, the longed-for destination of so many tourists from central and northern Italy especially, is a relatively small island located in the north of Tuscany, the region that has Florence and its stupendous works of art as its capital.

It belongs to the Tuscan archipelago and can be explored in any way: by bicycle - going around the entire coastline as it is only 30 kms long and 19 kms wide -, by car obviously through numerous roads and provincial streets paved and in perfect condition or simply walking along the beaches and plains of the centre, although a more demanding trekking in some hilly areas such as Mount Capanne, roof of Elba with its little more than 1,000 metres above sea level is not to be disdained.

La isla de Elba, meta añorada de tantos turistas del centro y norte de Italia especialmente, es una isla relativamente pequeña ubicada en el norte de la Toscana, la región que tiene a Florencia y sus estupendas obras de arte como capital.

Pertenece al archipiélago toscano y se puede recorrer en cualquier modo: en bicicleta -rodeando toda la costa ya que tiene apenas 30 kms de largo por 19 kms de ancho-, en auto obviamente a través de numerosas carreteras y calles provinciales asfaltadas y en perfecto estado o simplemente caminando por las playas y las llanuras del centro, aunque no es de desdeñar un trekking más exigentes en algunas zonas colinares como el monte Capanne, techo de Elba con sus poco más de 1.000 metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar.

We also had the opportunity to visit Marciana Marina and Colle d'Orano, the first is a picturesque village with fishermen's houses in beautiful pastel shades, and the second is the so-called western gate of the island located on the rocky extremity of the cape of Sant'Andrea, both with wonderful viewpoints that offer a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea and sunsets of an incredible deep red colour, surrounded by vineyards and a stunning green.

A little further on we find Marina di Campo, a village located practically at water level, which by pure miracle is saved from being flooded by the high tides, which are very rare in this part of the island, and Capoliveri, a small village located on a hill. Of all the population centres, perhaps the most stately in terms of history, art and tradition is Porto Azzurro, which dominates the eastern part of the island, nestled between its excellent beaches and the bastions that remind us of the 17th century and the protection they represented against the pirate invasions that came from North Africa, the island of Sardinia and Spain itself.

According to what we were able to find out from the local Tourist Office Elba is, according to myth, one of the pearls of the diadem that the goddess Venus lost in the Tyrrhenian Sea which today belongs to the Tuscan Archipelago, declared a natural park for its unspoilt landscapes, and which is one of the three internal seas of the Mediterranean Sea, the other two being the Sardinian Sea which surrounds the island of the same name right in the centre of the Mediterranean and the remaining one is the Ligurian Sea on whose shores I spent almost half of my life.

The capital of the island of Elba is Portoferraio which is connected to land by numerous ferries (traghetti in Italian) especially during the summer season and offers numerous attractions for tourists such as the Falcone fort and the lighthouse Estrella, all monuments and constructions from the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the Modern era in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. But the island of Elba is world famous historically because Napoleon Bonaparte lived there during his exile in 1814.

Según lo que pudimos averiguar en Oficina de Turismo local Elba es, según el mito, una de las perlas de la diadema que la diosa Venus perdió en el mar Tirreno que hoy pertenece al Archipiélago Toscano, declarado parque natural por sus paisajes intactos, y que es uno de los tres mares internos del Mar Mediterráneo, los otros dos son el Mar de Cerdeña que rodea la isla homónima justo en el centro del Mediterráneo y el restante es el Mar Ligure en cuyas costas pasé casi la mitad de mi vida.

La capital de la isla de Elba es Portoferraio que está conectada a tierra por numerosos ferris (traghetti en italiano) especialmente durante la temporada estiva y ofrece numerosos atractivos para el turista como el fuerte Falcone y el faro Estrella todos monumentos y construcciones del tardío Medioevo e inicios de la era Moderna allá por los siglos XV, XVI y XVII. Pero la isla de Elba es famosa mundialmente a nivel histórico porque en ella vivió Napoleón Bonaparte durante su exilio en el año 1814.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar también Marciana Marina y Colle d’Orano, la primera es una pintoresca aldea con casas de pescadores en hermosos tonos pastel, y la segunda es la llamada puerta del oeste de la isla ubicada en la extremidad rocosa del cabo de Sant'Andrea, ambas con estupendos miradores que ofrecen una vista panorámica del Mar Mediterráneo y atardeceres de un color rojo intenso increíble, rodeados de viñas y de un verde impactante.

Un poco más allá encontramos Marina di Campo, una aldea ubicada prácticamente a ras de agua, uqe por puro milagro se salva de ser inundada por las altas mareas que en esta zona de la isla son muy escasas y Capoliveri, un pequeño centro poblado ubicado sobre una colina. De todos los centros poblacionales tal vez el más señorial por historia, arte y tradición sea Porto Azzurro que domina la parte este de la isla, encastrado entre sus excelentes playas y los bastiones que nos recuerdan el siglo XVII y la protección que los mismos representaban sobre las invasiones piratas que provenían del norte de Africa, de la isla de Cerdeña y de la misma España.

The island of Elba itself was a medieval fishing village and fort on the north coast of Italy, with a picturesque harbour especially in the morning when the fishermen sell their catch from the same boats in which they have caught the fish, guaranteeing the absolute freshness of the product, which has gradually discovered its tourism potential domestically rather than internationally. Foreign tourists generally go to the island of Sardinia, while Italians visit the island of Elba a lot. At one time it was called "poor tourism" for those who went to the island of Elba, but today it is less so.

Its strait location - it is situated in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea, between the Italian peninsula and the island of Corsica - has meant that centuries ago this island, which belongs to the Tuscany region, offered all its Mediterranean charms to visitors. Portoferraio, its capital, was built as a fortified city to repel the attacks of invaders who came across the Mediterranean Sea and, once this barrier was overcome, could freely enter Italian territory. For this reason, apart from a fortified city, several forts were built, such as Stella, Falcone and Inglese, to protect the maritime entrance to the city, forming a real protective cordon around the whole island.

La isla de Elba en si era una aldea de pescadores y fuertes medievales en la costa norte de Italia, con un puerto pintoresco especialmente por la mañana cuando los pescadores venden sus capturas desde las mismas barcas en las que han recogido la pesca, garantiozando la absoluta frescura del producto, que de a poco ha ido descubriendo su potencial turístico a nivel interno más que internacional. El turismo extranjero generalmente va a la isla de Cerdeña mientras que los italianos visitan mucho la isla de Elba. En una época lo llamaban "turismo pobre" a los que iban a la isla de Elba, hoy no lo es tanto.

Su ubicación estratégica -está stuada en mitad del Mar Tirreno, entre la península itálica y la isla de Córcega- ha hecho que hace siglos esta isla que pertenece a la región Toscana ofreciera todos sus encantos mediterráneos a los visitantes. Portoferraio su capital surgió como consecuencia de construir una ciudad fortificada para rechazar los ataques de los invasores que llegaban a través del Mar Mediterráneo y una vez superada esta barrera podín entrar libremente en territorio italiano. Por ese motivo aparte de una ciudad forticada se construyeron también varios fuertes como los de Stella, Falcone e Inglese para proteger la entrada marítima a la ciudad formando un verdadero cordón protectivo alrededor de toda la isla.

The island of Elba is a natural paradise in the Tyrrhenian Sea, quite close to the mainland, on the Tuscan coast, and represents an ideal destination for those who want to live quiet and stress-free days totally relaxed away from the grey and heavy monotony and daily routine of the cities, especially in Italy where the cities and their urban agglomerations are very close to each other due to the reduced extension of the territory.

The port of departure for the island of Elba from the Italian territory is Piombino which allows to reach the three ports of the island: Portoferraio (the capital) and also two smaller ports easily accessible by ferries: Rio Marina and Cavo. The journey time is quite short and varies between fifteen minutes and sixty minutes, depending on the means of transport (there are smaller fast ferries and others with larger capacity (cars and people) but slower.

La isla de Elba es un paraíso natural en el mar Tirreno, bastante cerca de la tierra firme, en la costa toscana, y representa un un destino ideal para los que quieren vivir días tranquilos y sin estres totalmente relajados lejos de la gris y pesada monotonía y rutina diaria de las ciudades, especialmente en Italia donde las ciudades y sus aglomerados urbanos están muy cerca unos de otros debido a la reducida extensión del territorio.

El puerto de salida para la isla de Elba desde territorio italiano es Piombino que permite llegar a los tres puertos de la isla: Portoferraio (la capital) y también dos puertos menores pero de fácilò acceso para los ferries: Rio Marina y Cavo. La duración del viaje es bastante corta y varía entre quince minutos y sesenta, según el medio de transporte (hay ferries veloces más pequeños y otros con mayor capacidad (autos y personas) pero más lentos.
