Good morning dear #hivers cinephiles of this beloved community.

Today I want to talk to you about a 1997 Dutch film that at the time went somewhat unnoticed not only in the Hispanic market but also in the U.S., despite being an excellent film product.

It is Character and was one of the first films that marked NetFlix's initial incursion into the industry.

Hoy les quiero hablar de una película holandesa del año 1997 que en su momento pasó algo desapercibida no solo en el mercado hispano sino también en los EE. UU., no obstante ser un excelente producto cinematográfico.

Se trata de Carácter (Character) y fue uno de las primeras películas que marcó la incursión inicial de NetFlix en el sector.

Character (Karakter in Dutch) is based on two short stories by Ferdinand Bordewijk that puts the problematic of human relationships at the disposal of the reader/viewer, dealing with conflicts but without seeking a solution.

Each character is a victim and an executioner of himself in a contemporary way.

Carácter (Karakter en holandés) está basada en dos cuentos de Ferdinand Bordewijk que pone a disposición del lector/espectador la problemática de las relaciones humanas, tratando los conflictos pero sin buscar una solución.

Cada personaje es víctima y verdugo de si mismo en forma contemporánea.

The film takes place in the city of Rotterdam, at the beginning of the 20th century and shows a young man coming out of a building along the city's canal.

What catches the attention of passers-by at that moment is the hallucination that shows his covered and bloody face.

Shortly after arriving at his house, the police, who had already been warned of the fact, raids and arrests him.

The facts show that Dreverhaven, one of the most prominent administrators of the city, also one of the most pesdiapados ususreros although nobody dares to denounce it in public, has been murdered.

And according to the data provided, the testimonies and the evidence, everything leads to incriminate the young Jacob Katadreuffe as the main suspect of the murder.

And at this point in the film begins a series of flashbacks that go back in time to return to the present, in continuation.

In the middle of them the young man tells his life story and reveals the link that connects him with the victim without omitting any detail: he is his illegitimate son and has always been ignored and despised by his natural father, a rude and miserable man.

La película se desarrolla en la ciudad de Rotterdam, a inicios del siglo XX y muestra a un joven sale de un edificio que se encuentra a lo largo del canal de la ciudad.

Lo que llama la atención de los transeúntes que pasan en ese momento es la alucinación que muestra su rostro cubierto y ensangrentado.

Poco después de llegar a su casa, la policía que ya ha sido advertida del hecho, efectúa una redada y lo detiene.

Los hechos demuestran que Dreverhaven, uno de los administradores más destacados de la ciudad, también uno de los más pesdiapados ususreros aunque nadie se anime a denunciarlo en público, ha sido asesinado.

Y en función de los datos aportados, los testimonios y las pruebas todo conduce a incriminar al joven Jacob Katadreuffe como principal sospechoso del asesinato.

Y en este momento de la película comienzan una serie de flaskback que van hacia atrás en el tiempo para volver al presente, en continuación.

En medio de ellos el joven cuenta su vida y revela el vínculo que lo conecta con la víctima sin omitir ningún detalle: es su hijo ilegítimo y ha sido siempre ignorado y despreciado por su padre natural, un hombre rudo y miserable.

Despite not being well-known actors, their work is more than outstanding.

It is a hard and cold drama about personal relationships, between a son ignored and even despised by his father, who seeks to make his way in life by his own means.

And a relationship that gradually gives way to enmity and hatred. Where there is no room for sentimentality or emotional blackmail.

And where money acquires, in all its tragedy, the true meaning of Calvinist morality.

A pesar de no ser actores conocidos su labor es más que sobresaliente.

Es un drama duro y frio sobre las relaciones personales, entre un hijo ignorado y hasta despreciado por el padre, que busca abrirse camino en la vida por sus propios medios. Y una relación que de a poco va dejando espacio a la enmistad y al odio.

Donde no hay lugar para sentimentalismos ni chantajes emocionales.

Y donde el dinero adquiere, en toda su tragedia, el verdadero sentido de la moral calvinista.
