Intercontinental flights are often not very pleasant, contrary to what many people think.

Aeroplanes are getting smaller and smaller, the space to move around in them is getting smaller and smaller and after 10-12 hours of sitting the trip loses all its charm.

Trying to reduce costs many times, especially during the end of the year holidays, when fares are quite high, we choose flights with stopovers that end up representing, in many cases, an excellent opportunity to stretch our legs, do some exercise and obviously, get to know a bit the place where we have to wait several hours until the next flight.

In our case we coordinated both flights, by the way, with the biggest difference in hours between one and the other.

In short, we arrived in Madrid from Rome in the early hours of the morning and decided to take the return flight to Buenos Aires after midnight.

Such a long wait time on a stopover had its purpose: to get to know Madrid.

The excellent service connecting Barajas airport with the metropolitan Puerta del Sol took us to the centre of Madrid in little more than half an hour.

And from then on: walking!

Realizar vuelos intercontinentales muchas veces tiene poco de placentero contra lo que piensan muchas personas.

Los aviones son cada vez más pequeños,
Los aviones son cada vez menors, el espacio para moerellos es cada vez menor y después de 10-12 horas sentados el viaje pierde todo su encanto.

Tratando de reducir los costos muchas veces, especialmente durante las fiestas de fin de año, en las cuáles las tarifas son bastante elevadas, elegimos vuelos con escalas que terminan representando, en mucho casos, una excelente oportunidad para estirar las piernas, hacer algo de ejercicio y obviamente, conocer un poco el lugar donde debemos esperar varias horas hasta el próximo vuelo.

En nuestro caso coordinamos ambos vuelos, a propósito, con la mayor diferencia en horas entre uno y otro.

En pocas palabras, llegamos a Madrid procediente de Roma en las primeras horas de la mañana y decidimos tomar el vuelo para Buenos Aires pasada la medianoche.

Semejante tiempo de espera en una escala tenía su objetivo: conocer Madrid.

El excelente servicio que conecta el aeropuerto de Barajas con la metropolitana de Puerta del Sol no llevó al centro de Madrid en poco más de media hora.

Y a partir de esa momento: a caminar!

With no fixed direction and no predetermined goal, no maps of any kind and not even oriented by Google Maps, we decided to spend the whole day until the first hours of dusk told us it was time to go back to the airport to walk.

Apart from the pleasure of the walk and getting to know the centre of Madrid we were going to be tired enough to sleep the whole trip.

We knew that we had the whole day at our disposal so we started our tour calmly.

Sin rumbo fijo y sin una meta predeterminada, sin mapas de ningún tipo y ni siquiera orientados por Google Maps decidimos pasar todo el día hasta que las primeras horas del atardecer nos indicaran la hora de volver al aeropuerto a caminar.

Aparte del placer de la caminata y de conocer el centro de Madrid ibamos a estar lo suficientemente cansados como para dormir todo el viaje.

Sabíamos que teníamos todo el dia disposición por lo cuál iniciamos nuestro recorrido con calma.

Without realising it or doing it on purpose, we began to walk along the Calle Mayor, which would lead us to the famous square of the Spanish capital of the same name.

It is a whole area surrounded by squares: Pontejos, de la Provincia, Santa Cruz, Comandante Las Morenas, among those we were able to see and walk around.

Nearby we also found the Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel and the gastronomic market of San Miguel, an elegant covered gastronomic market, a delight for tourists.

It was not in our interest to stop for lunch, so we continued walking.

Sin darnos cuenta ni hacerlo a propósito comenzamos a caminar por la calle Mayor que nos llevaría a la famosa plaza de la capital de España que lleva el mismo nombre.

Es toda una zona rodeada de plazas: Pontejos, de la Provincia, Santa Cruz, Comandante Las Morenas, entre las que pudimos ver y recorrer.

Y cerca también encontramos la Basílica Pontificia de San Miguel y el Mercado gastronómico San Miguel elegante mercado gastronómico cubierto, delicia de los turistas.

No era nuestro interés detenernos a comer razón por la cuál seguimos caminando.

Until we arrived at Plaza España.

I remember the surprise of a (presumed) Madrileño when we asked him what the square was called.

In front of us there were two huge statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, Spain's greatest emblem and cultural icon.

The curious thing is that in front of so much historical, artistic and cultural symbolism there was a gigantic commercial curtain-poster promoting a brand of automobile that covered practically the entire upper part of a building.

Hasta que llegamos a Plaza España.

Recuerdo la sorpresa de un (presunto) madrileño cuando le preguntamos como se llamaba esa plaza.

Delante nuestro había dos enormes estatuas de Don Quijote y Sancho Panza, máximo emblema e icona cultural de España.

Lo curioso es que de frente a tanto simbolismo histórico, artístico y cultural había un gigantesco telón-cartel comercial promocionando una marca de automotores que cubría prácticamente toda la parte superior de un edificio.

The Monument to Cervantes (as it is officially called) with its traditional fountain is a monument that is over a hundred years old and the work was started during the reign of Alfonso XIII to commemorate the three hundredth anniversary of the third edition of Don Quixote.

We walk around the square several times and continue our itinerant tour aimlessly.

El Monumento a Cervantes (tal es su nombre oficial) con su tradicional fuente es un monumento que tiene ya más de cien años y la obra fue iniciada durante el reinado de Alfonso XIII conmemorando los trescientos años de la tercera edición de El Quijote.

La obra debía representar los principales personajes de El Quijote incluyendo Aldonza y Dulcinea y entre trabas burocráticas, ambas guerras y otros problemas tardó casi medio siglo en terminarse.

Recién en los años sesenta fue completada en su totalidad.

También hay escenas de La Gitanilla, Rinconete, Cortadillo y otros personajes.

Un verdadero emblema cultural de toda España.

Damos varias vueltas recorriendo toda la plaza y seguimos nuestro recorrido itinerante sin rumbo fijo.

We walked past the Royal Palace in Madrid, the official residence of the Head of State, the King of Spain.

Actually, we were told that the King and Queen do not live here but in the Zarzuela Palace.

This building is intended for official ceremonies.

It is huge, twice the size of Buckingham Palace in England. It has more than 3,000 rooms.

Pasamos delante al Palacio Real de Madrid, residencia oficial del Jefe del Estado, el rey de España.

En realidad nos han dicho que los reyes no viven acá sino en el Palacio de la Zarzuela.

Este edificio está destinado a ceremonias oficiales.

Es enorme, el doble del Palacio de Buckingham en Inglaterra. Tiene más de 3 .000 habitaciones.

Although the Plaza de España is dominated by the Cervantes Monument, it is not the only one.

For example the square is surrounded by a large number of emblematic buildings of Madrid such as the Torre de Madrid which was once the tallest in the city, the Casa Gallardo, the building of the Compañia Austuriana de Minas and others.

It is time to return to the airport. We return to Puerta del Sol and from there we take the metro to the Barajas terminal.

We still have more than 10,000 km to go. But the day has been well spent. We got to know the centre of Madrid. And that's no small feat.

Cuando queremos acordarnos ya las luces del atardecer comienzan a marcar con sombras muchas partes de la ciudad.

Es hora de regresar al aeropuerto. Volvemos a Puerta del Sol y de ahí tomamos el metro con destino al terminal de Barajas.

Todavía nos esperan más de 10.000 kms para recorrer. Pero el dia ha sido muy bien aprovechado. Hemos conocido el centro de Madrid. Y no es poco.
