Merry Christmas to you all!

In this last post

On this special day that often serves to remember so many aspects of our lives gathered around the family table, I propose a trip to the past.

Or rather one of my journeys, the main one perhaps, made in the past.

Special because it meant emigrating from my country when I was still very young to go to another continent with very different ingrained customs, where even a different language was spoken.

En este último post

En este día tan especial que muchas veces sirve para recordar tantos aspectos de nuestra vida reunidos alrededor de la mesa familiar, les propongo hacer un viaje al pasado.

O mejor uno de mis viajes, el principal tal vez, hecho en el pasado.

Especial porque significaba emigrar de mi país siendo aún muy joven para ir a otro continente con costumbres arraigadas muy distintas, donde incluso se hablaba un idioma distinto.

So, remembering my first trip to Europe in 1990, I have managed to recover from my beloved album of analogue photographs (yes, those that were later printed on photographic paper, and I'm not talking about prehistory, eh!) some photos of that adventure.

With a camera that was acceptable at the time but that today would not even be useful for taking domestic photos. Technology has evolved so much in the last few decades.

Mobile phones have only recently been making their mark on the market.

So we had to re-digitise them to be able to share those moments in this community.

The airplanes were huge. There was not the limitation of 320 passengers that the Airbus used by almost all European airlines or most Boeing airliners have now. Fuel had not yet assumed the dominant role that it came to play years later.

De esa manera y recordando mi primer viaje a Europa en el año 1990 he logrado recuperar de mi querido album de fotografías analógicas (si, esas que luego se hacían imprimir en papel fotogrófico, y no estoy hablando de la prehistoria, eh!) algunas fotos de esa aventura.

Con una cámara fotográfica que en ese momento era aceptable pero que hoy no serviría ni siquiera para sacar fotos domésticas. Tanto ha evolucionado la tecnología en estas últimas décadas.

Los celulares hacía poco que estaban imponiendo en el mercado.

De manera tal que de debido redigitalizarlas para poder compartir esos momentos en esta comunidad.

Los aéreos eran enormes. No había la limitación de 320 pasajeros que tienen ahora los Airbus que usan casi todas las compañas aéreas europeas o la mayoría de los Boeing. El carburante no había asumido todavía el rol preponderante que pasó a tener años más tarde.

I took a Canadian Pacific (now defunct), a Boeing with almost 700 seats available. Wide corridors to stretch my legs, very comfortable seats and an efficient stewardess service.

The first leg was Buenos Aires-Toronto where we had a full day stopover and then we were on our way to Milan (Italy).

On the day we were in Toronto we took the opportunity to see everything that an anxious tourist can see in late spring, early summer in the northern hemisphere. In Italy, the World Cup was about to begin and Germany was crowned champion in that memorable final against Argentina.

I was struck by the number of glass buildings, tall skyscrapers, that Toronto already had at that time. It looked like a modern city built in steel and glass.

Tomé un avión de la compañia canadiense Canadian Pacific (hoy desaparecida), un Boeing con casi 700 puestos disponibles. Amplios corredores para estirar las piernas, butacas muy cómodas y un eficiente servicio de azafatas.

El primer tramo fue Buenos Aires-Toronto donde hicimos escala durante un día entero para luego repartir con destino a Milan (Italia).

En esa día que estuvimos en Toronto aprovechamos por ver todo lo que un turista ansioso puede ver hacia fines de primavera, inicios de verano en pleno hemisferio septentrional. En Italia estaba por comenzar el Mundial de Fútbol que coronó campeón a Alemania en esa recordada final con Argentina.

Me llamó la atención la cantidad de edificios en vidrio, altos rascacielos, que ya tenía Toronto en esa época. Parecía una ciudad moderna construída en acero y vidrio.

As well as the silence of the public transport (buses or trains) accustomed to the chaotic and noisy traffic of a big city like Buenos Aires.

Visiting the CN Tower (the translation would give us something like the Canadian National Tower) which is the most emblematic icon of Toronto was a must. With its panoramic levels to observe the city. And above all the Ontario Bay in all its magnificence and splendour.

We reached the first floor Observatory (the third and last observatory was not accessible) via an external lift. We were 346 metres above sea level. Not suitable for people suffering from vertigo.

It was a unique sensation. A mixture of anxiety and admiration. It was like having the whole city at your fingertips.

The glass floor, a few metres below, is a unique experience, only for those adventurers who are not afraid of danger. Although in reality there is no danger as it is prepared to support the weight of 10 adult hippos, something like ten tons. But the anxiety is always present.

We toured the rest of the city in the hours we had left before returning to the airport. And start a new adventure.

In this case it was the adventure of our own lives.
